Children’s Faith Formation

Parish School of Religion

The Parish School of Religion (PSR) of St. Patrick and St. Malachi Parishes is a faith formation program for students in grades K-8 who do not attend a Catholic school. We also offer a high school program for teens attending any Catholic or non-Catholic school. Registration is required and a fee of $30 helps cover the cost of student materials, supplies, and a monthly supper after Family Mass.

Our children and teens have a lively faith, which must be respected, nurtured, and developed through age-appropriate instruction, prayer, liturgical experience, and formation based on the Catechism of the Catholic Church.

The National Study of Youth and Religion offers a plethora of information on the importance of faith formation in the lives of children and youth, and of a lived and well-articulated faith evident in their parents’ daily life. Youth will tend to believe and practice as their parents have.

How does the pandemic affect PSR?

In light of COVID-19 guidelines for safety, beginning with the 2020-2021 school year, two in-person sessions will be held each month in the third-floor ballroom of the Club building. Each family will have a designated table, adequately spaced, for the entire school year (late August to the end of April). Individual supplies will be provided.

On the first Sunday of the month, October through April, Family Mass will be celebrated at 6:00pm followed by family faith formation, concluding at 7:30pm. Parents will be prepared to teach their children at home from grade-level student workbooks, Finding God.

An all homeschool option is also available. All parents will receive a video created by the catechetical leader, which will familiarize parents or guardians with material from each of five units throughout the year.

Parents will have Parent Quick Guides to walk them through sessions with their children. The catechetical leader and catechists will be available to provide support and resources to families.

On the last Sunday of the month, August through April, faith formation and family celebration will be held from 9:45-11:15 am, again in the ballroom at family tables.

Teens will have sessions in the Mission House on the first Sundays (after Mass) and last Sundays of the month. They will have one online meeting for one hour in mid-month and utilize Called to be More high school Theology of the Body curriculum.

Catechists and/or the catechetical leader will meet with parents whose children are preparing for reconciliation, first Communion or confirmation to review additional formation of children for these sacraments.

If you are interested in registering a child, please complete this registration form. The $20 registration fee (for student book and family YouCat) may be dropped at the rectory or mailed to:

No child is refused based on financial difficulty. Please contact Stephanie if the registration fee is a hardship.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word

“In the Liturgy of the Word, the Church feeds the people of God from the table of his Word (cf. Sacrosanctum Concilium, no. 51). The Scriptures are the word of God, written under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. In the Scriptures, God speaks to us, leading us along the path to salvation.”

“Liturgy of the Word,” United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Children’s Liturgy of the Word (CLOW) provides young children attending Mass an opportunity to explore the Gospel message at their developmental level with an experienced and knowledgeable leader. Children in PreK-grade 2 are invited to attend. No registration is required. Children are called forward to gather for a blessing and then move to a room off the side entrance for the Gospel reading, sharing, song, and prayer, before returning for the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Parents are welcome to participate with their children.

CLOW teachers and assistants are VIRTUS-trained and background-checked and have completed reading and acknowledging diocesan documents. (See Protection of Children and Youth.)

During the COVID-19 outbreak, families have accessed CLOW via online video. Look here for the most recent post, or visit the Archives for earlier episodes. Posts are tagged with the scriptural reference, so you can search for particular lessons. Watch for a return to our regular format when conditions permit.

RCIA Adapted for Children

Unbaptized children who have reached the age of reason (age seven or older) participate in a form of Rite of Christian Initiation that has been adapted for children. The Rites are the same as for the adults, although the children receive catechesis at school, in PSR, and at home, as well as in a group with a catechist, other children and a parent. Sacraments are received at Easter. Contact Stephanie Pritts at catechetical.leader@stpatrickbridge.org or call 216-631-6872 to find out how your child can begin this formation.
