Have you glimpsed God today?

Gaudete Sunday, 13 December 2020

In today’s reflection, Waiting in Joyful Hope author Michelle Francl-Donnay reflects on John 1:19, 20b, the wisdom of Meister Eckhart, the Star Prophecy, and catching a glimmer of God.

  1. In reflecting on today’s Gospel, I was aware of how secure John the Baptist was in his identity. He knew who he was and who he was not. He was so very clear that he was not the Messiah. He knew himself. Do we know who we are and our role, our place in salvation history? Are we as secure in our vocation as follower of Jesus? I know I am a Christian; my vocation is to follow Christ.

    1. St. John the Baptist is an excellent example to whom to look when I lose sight of who I am. There are still moments I lose my composure. Knowing who I am not is a good starting place when I feel lost.

  2. St. John the Baptist’s words, “I am not the Christ,” remind me that it’s not all about me. It’s about Another. And yet, I am His hands a feet and voice, St. Teresa of Avila reminds me. It is about how I let Him work through me. I can squirm and squiggle the path, or I can relax, breathe and straighten the path, sharing what the Spirit prompts me to share. He has already come, yet we must continue to be the voices in the desert until He comes again!

  3. When I first looked at this question early this morning I thought are you kidding it is just the beginning of the day. Then I thought I talked to God when I woke up, I saw birds flying over the corn field, I hugged my husband. I have had a glimpse of God today. Later today I will do something new, review my day in terms of my interactions with others. I will look at my feelings during those interactions, anxiety and desires. What was beneath those feelings? Was God talking to me through those people and those interactions? In those interactions was I moving toward or away from God? I will be blessed with another glimpse of God.
