How do you call God?

Third Friday of Advent, 18 December 2020

In today’s reflection, Waiting in Joyful Hope author Michelle Francl-Donnay reflects on Matthew 1:23b and how “OMG” doesn’t really suffice.

In the comments section below, share your own response to today’s scripture, Francl-Donnay’s reflection, or the accompanying meditation prompt.

  1. Names matter. Sometimes I can remember a name and greet the person enthusiastically. But often, I am at a loss, and must embarrassingly admit I have forgotten the person’s name and apologize. I feel a distance then, because I didn’t care enough about the person to even remember his name. That distance makes it difficult to grow community, one of St. Ignatius’ spiritual gifts. The name, Adonai, has always been special to me. I am immediately part of a larger community when I talk to Jesus using this name. It stretches back to Moses. He came to save them, us, and everyone who is yet to be born. When I need a smaller community, I seek out my husband, a friend, or sit down to pray. Always I am in good company. O Adonai, thank you for setting me free!

  2. I call on God as I would a friend. Believing/knowing that He/She is always with me. A morning prayer is “Build with me what you want today Lord. Take from me anything that hurts you, me or others. Give to me what I need to do your will and be a sign of your love.” I try to say “thank you” God as many times as I say “please God” but always fall short. I try to be award of God’s presence throughout the day.
