To live on the southern shore of Lake Erie takes flexibility. “Don’t like the weather? Wait 5 minutes, it will change.” Except maybe in winter when that uniformly grey flannel sky descends obliterating our view of the sun. Jesus told John’s followers to read the signs- the blind see, the lame walk, the deaf hear, the mute speak and demons are dismissed. It requires spiritual flexibility to read God’s signs, especially when the grey flannel presses down. Within our relationships, the grey flannel can obliterate our view of the beauty within another person. St. Ignatius reminds us that it is these grey moments we are called to reconciliation, to be in right relationship. I look for signs of Christ in the beauty and order of all creation. I look for signs of Christ in all people especially those I don’t especially like. I look for signs of Christ within myself.
